Faye-Ann Lyons|Last.FM

Faye Anne Lyons is, like her father, is now a "Super" product of Trinidad and Tobago. Just like her father did she too has impacted the music industry of the twin island republic. Now married to Bunji Garlin she is a proud mother who has learnt to be patient and has conquered the music business - she will rule the Caribbean music industry for years to come.

Born in Point Fortin, on November 5th, to calypsonian Lady Gypsy and now-famed soca monarch champion, Super Blue (Austin Lyons), Faye Ann Lyons is a Trinidadian performer and lyricist. Faye Ann performs both at local and international carnival events. 

She has co-written many of her songs. She captured the covetted Road March Monarch title in 2003 with “Display” a song she wrote herself, which also won her awards at the COTT (Copyright Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago) Music Awards in 2004.

Lord Kitchener|Last.FM

Aldwyn Roberts [1922-2000], was a calypso composer and performer born in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago. Born on April 18th to a blacksmith father named Stephen and a homemaker mother named Albertha, he is best known as Lord Kitchener, a sobriquet he derived from the valiant and formidable British soldier whose name was famous in Trinidad at the time Roberts started his career as a calypsonian. He was also sometimes called just “Kitchener” or fondly “Kitchie” by those who knew him well.

Kitchener was a musical genius whose calypso recordings became famous for their popularity as chosen songs for steelbands to play at the Panorama competition every carnival season in Trinidad and Tobago. Kitchener also made a name for himself as Road March Monarch by dominating in this competition for many years, winning this title given to the most popular song on the “road” for the Carnival many times.

Earthwatch: Trinidad’s Leatherback Sea Turtles - Earthwatch

 

Each night under swaying palms and bright tropical stars, your team will patrol sections of the beach with the staff and volunteers of Nature Seekers. In peak season, you may find as many as 150 sea turtles nesting each night. At every encounter, you’ll tag, measure, and weigh these turtles—which can grow as long as 2 meters/6.5 feet and weigh up to 900 kilograms/2000 lbs!--and collect other data crucial for local and worldwide conservation efforts. Since green and hawskbill turtles also nest in the area, you may record some data on them, as well.

The leatherback sea turtles are protected in Trinidad and Tobago. On the east cost (Matura beach) there are volunteers who devote time to ensure that the poachers don't intrude on these fantastic creatures when they return to the land of their birth to lay their eggs.

Man greeting Man - In a casual setting, men often offer a simple nod of acknowledgment. In a more formal setting, men will shake hands. 

Woman greeting Woman - Women usually greet each other with a hello, and depending on the level of familiarity will sometimes kiss each other on the cheek or exchange hugs. In a more formal setting, women will usually shake hands.

Greetings between Men & Women- In a casual setting, a verbal greeting and/or a simple nod of acknowledgment is common.  In a more formal setting, a handshake is common.  Good friends and family may exchange a kiss on the cheek.

UTC Southeast Center for Education in the Arts | Trinidad & Tobago

Eugene Joseph, director of the Trinidad Dance Theatre and a former Director of Culture for the Ministry of Community Development and Culture, contacted SCEA in 2006 to inquire about professional development in arts integration. Discussions led to the development of a comprehensive plan to establish a Trinidad & Tobago Centre for Arts Education & Integration, which would facilitate ongoing professional development for university arts and education faculty, primary and secondary school administrators and teachers, and practicing artists.

Superstitions of Trinidad and Tobago

Dey Say In Trinidad if you get your feet swept that you will not get married. I always got in the way of my mother when she cleaned the house. I had my feet swept countless times. Did it work? Well I am happily married and totally whipped!

In Trinidad if you don’t want Jumbies to follow you home make sure and enter your home walking backwards. I don’t know much about this because I never encountered a Jumbie other that the Moko Jumbies on Carnival day. Do they count? I guess not so that is one that I need some help with this one but not interested in meeting any Jumbies.

Umbrellas, you should never open one indoors because my friend standing next to you will be figure that you can’t see but its weight will bog you down. Of course if you did not guess by now a Jumbie will be standing next to you under the umbrella.

Oh yes this one is a classic, one must never pick up money that you find in the road especially copper coins. I remember when I was a kid hearing the story of the girl who got copper pox because she picked up money that had an evil spell cast into it – she died.

Do you remember owning all those pot hounds as a child? Well if you dog barks at night and does not want to stop and you don’t see anything there then definitely the dog is seeing a spirit.

Now are you adventurous? If you want to see a spirit then take the crust (yampee) from the dog’s eye and put it in yours then at twelve midnight peep through a key hole and you will see douens and other spirits.

If your left palm is itching (scratching) you then you will get money but if it is the right hand then chances are that you will loose some cash very soon.

If, for no reason, you bite your tongue then someone is talking ill of you.

If a family member dies then it is very important that you cover all the mirrors in the house with a black cloth to avoid seeing them in the mirror.

If you have a business and you sweep the floors and the dust out the door then you are sweeping all of your money a way.

If your second toe is longer than your big toe then you will rule your husband.

The list of superstitious beliefs in Trinidad and Tobago is a very long one indeed. These are just a few of the ones that I can recall. I will continue with this list after speaking to my friends and family members in the homeland. So until we meet again … Cote ci Cote la!

Recognizing The World Of Poetry

Trinidad and Tobago has so much to offer and it is with this in mind that I am posting this link to a very interesting site. Religion and expressive culture - East Indians in Trinidad

Religious Beliefs. The overwhelming majority of Indian indentured laborers considered themselves Hindus, but most of them were from rural, unsophisticated backgrounds; they left theological questions to the priesthood, which had, in fact, relatively few representatives with real knowledge. Furthermore, Trinidad East Indians were cut off from communication with India until well into the twentieth century, and so had little knowledge of the changes taking place in Indian Hinduism. For most Hindu East Indians, therefore, the practice of their religion entailed making offerings (in some cases, animal sacrifices) to guardian spirits and to divinities at shrines and small temples, along with observing calendrical holidays and events such as Diwali (a festival of lights) and Holi (also known as Phagwa; a springtime festival of play and singing). In addition, pujas (ceremonies involving prayers, offerings, and a celebratory feast) were sponsored by families on birthdays or to give thanks for good fortune.
